Three midterm volunteer opportunities
Go in person or stay home. Every option starts with training, and you pick the shift that fits your week.
Canvass for Democrats in Wisconsin and Michigan
Knock doors in swing-state races with a buddy. Free carpools leave from Chicagoland hubs, most sites are 60 minutes to 2.5 hours away, and training is provided.
Canvass trips →Phone bank for Democrats from home
Join a virtual phone bank from your computer. A live Zoom training comes first, and the dialer masks your personal number.
Phone bank shifts →Write postcards to swing-state voters
Write handwritten postcards to swing-state voters at a postcard party with a local Chicago-area Democratic group.
Postcard options →Why Illinois Democrats volunteer next door
Illinois is not a swing state, so statewide races here are rarely decided by a few votes. Wisconsin races are routinely decided by less than 1%, and Michigan has a high-stakes U.S. Senate race and toss-up House seats. Chicago sits right at the border, which is why Illinois volunteers can supply decisive field capacity.
In 2024 our coalition mobilized ten thousand canvassing shifts and knocked a quarter million doors in Wisconsin and Michigan. Read more on our Illinois and Midwest strategy page, or see which states count as swing states and why.
Volunteering for Democrats in Illinois this midterm
Election Day is November 3, 2026. Here is how swing-state trips fit alongside local Democratic work in Illinois.
Local Illinois Democratic work
- Run by your ward, township, or county Democratic organization.
- Focused on Illinois candidates on your own ballot, plus petitioning and neighborhood turnout.
- Close to home, often weeknights, and a good way to meet local organizers.
Swing-state trips with Operation Swing State
- Canvass for Democrats in Wisconsin and Michigan races decided by narrow margins.
- Weekend day trips with free carpools from Chicagoland hubs and training on site.
- Phone banks and postcards reach the same voters if you cannot travel.
You do not have to choose. Many Illinois ward, township, and county Democratic organizations are coalition partners, and their members often fill our weekend carpools. If you have never knocked doors before, start with Canvassing 101.

Illinois midterm volunteer FAQs
Quick answers before you sign up.
What midterm volunteer opportunities are there for Illinois Democrats?
Illinois volunteers can ride in a free weekend carpool from Chicagoland to canvass for Democrats in Wisconsin or Michigan, join a virtual phone bank from home, or write postcards to swing-state voters at a local Chicago-area postcard party. Upcoming shifts for all of these are listed on this page and on Mobilize.
How is this different from volunteering with my local Illinois Democratic organization?
Ward, township, and county Democratic organizations in Illinois mostly work on races inside Illinois: their own candidates, petition drives, and turnout in their neighborhoods. Operation Swing State sends Illinois volunteers to close races in neighboring states. Many of those local organizations are coalition partners, so you can do both, and their members often fill our carpools.
When are midterm volunteers needed most?
Election Day for the 2026 midterms is November 3, 2026. Shifts run every weekend through the fall, and the final weekends before Election Day, when campaigns focus on getting supporters to vote, are usually the busiest. Signing up early helps organizers plan carpools.
Is Operation Swing State part of the Democratic Party?
Operation Swing State is a volunteer-led coalition, not a single party committee. Its partners include Illinois Democratic ward, township, and county organizations, labor unions, and progressive advocacy groups, and its canvasses and phone banks support Democratic candidates.
Do I need experience or a car to volunteer?
No prior experience or personal car is required. Every canvass launch includes hands-on training, scripts, and buddy pairings for first-time volunteers, and we pair drivers who have extra seats with volunteers who need a ride.
Why travel to Wisconsin or Michigan when I live in Illinois?
Illinois is not a swing state, so volunteer time has the most impact in nearby swing states like Wisconsin and Michigan. Wisconsin and Michigan have races decided by razor-thin margins, and Wisconsin canvass sites are typically a 60- to 90-minute drive from Chicago.
Where do Chicago carpools depart from?
Carpool hubs have included Rogers Park, Lincoln Park, Logan Square, Oak Park, Evanston, and Highland Park, plus partner hubs such as 46th Ward Dems, UChicago, and Northwestern for Michigan trips. The exact meeting point for each trip is listed on its sign-up page.
Can I volunteer from home?
Yes. Virtual phone banks start with a live Zoom training, and the automated dialer masks your personal phone number. You can also write postcards to voters at a local Chicago-area postcard party.
How do I sign up?
Pick a shift from the upcoming list on this page. Sign-ups are handled through Mobilize, and your chosen shift page will confirm the time and meeting place.
