What’s at stake in Iowa in 2026

All four Iowa congressional seats are held by Republicans, and three of them, plus the open U.S. Senate seat, are competitive in 2026.

IA-2 · U.S. House (open seat)

Northeast Iowa, including Dubuque, Cedar Rapids and Waterloo. Rep. Ashley Hinson is running for Senate; state Rep. Lindsay James (D) of Dubuque faces Joe Mitchell (R).

Why volunteers go: This is the district our Dubuque drive-directly shifts canvass.

IA-1 · U.S. House

Southeast Iowa, including Davenport, Iowa City and Burlington. Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R) faces Christina Bohannan (D).

Why volunteers go: Includes the Iowa side of the Quad Cities, about three hours from Chicago.

IA-3 · U.S. House

Des Moines and south-central Iowa. Rep. Zach Nunn (R) faces Sarah Trone Garriott (D).

Why volunteers go: Decided by fewer than four points in each of the last two elections.

U.S. Senate (open seat)

Sen. Joni Ernst is retiring. Josh Turek (D) faces Ashley Hinson (R).

Why volunteers go: A statewide race, so every Iowa canvass shift counts toward it.

Iowa also elects a new governor: Rob Sand (D) faces Zach Lahn (R).

Iowa Canvassing FAQs

Everything you need to know about traveling from Chicago to knock doors in Iowa.

How do Chicago volunteers get to Iowa canvass shifts?

It depends on the shift. Some Iowa canvasses meet at a staging location in Chicago and carpool together; others are drive-directly shifts where you meet at the Iowa field office. Each Mobilize listing says which, and some listings mention gas cards for drivers.

Where in Iowa are Operation Swing State volunteers knocking doors?

Drive-directly shifts are in Dubuque, knocking doors for Lindsay James and other Democrats in Iowa's 2nd congressional district (IA-2). Chicago-launched trips, including an overnight early-vote trip and final-weekend get-out-the-vote canvasses, share the Iowa meeting address through the Mobilize listing.

What is the overnight early-vote trip to Iowa?

It is a three-day canvass trip that leaves Chicago on a Friday afternoon, canvasses Saturday and Sunday, and returns after an early-afternoon Sunday shift. The two overnights are in supporter housing provided by the organizers, and the listing asks volunteers to sign up for all three days.

Do I need prior experience to canvass in Iowa?

No. The listings ask volunteers to download the MiniVAN app before their shift, and first-time MiniVAN users receive in-person training on site before knocking doors.

Why do Illinois volunteers travel to Iowa?

Illinois is not a swing state, so Chicago-area volunteers put their time into races in neighboring states. Iowa shifts support Democratic candidates, including in Iowa's 2nd congressional district, where Dubuque is. Volunteers who cannot travel can join a phone bank or a postcard party instead.

How far is Dubuque from Chicago?

Dubuque is about 184 road miles from the Chicago Loop, roughly 3 to 4 hours by car without traffic. That distance is why Dubuque shifts are drive-directly and why some Chicago groups run overnight trips. Dubuque is in Iowa's 2nd Congressional District (IA-2).

Which Iowa races are competitive in 2026?

The Cook Political Report rates IA-1 (southeast Iowa, including Davenport and Iowa City), IA-3 (the Des Moines area) and the open U.S. Senate seat as toss-ups. The open IA-2 seat (northeast Iowa, including Dubuque and Cedar Rapids) is rated Lean Republican, and the open governor's race Lean Democratic.

When does early voting start in Iowa for the November 2026 election?

In-person early (absentee) voting at county auditor offices runs from Wednesday, October 14 through Monday, November 2, 2026. The voter pre-registration deadline is Monday, October 19, and requests for a mailed absentee ballot must reach your county auditor by 5 p.m. that day. Absentee ballots must reach the auditor by 8 p.m. on Election Day, November 3.
